(VANCOUVER , BRITISH COLUMBIA )- There is a new champion in the National Hockey League. The Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 last night in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to win their first championship since 1972. It was the fourth loss in five games for the Canucks, after winning the first two games of the series. For Boston , it was the second time this postseason that they came back from a 0-2 deficit to win a matchup. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas made 37 saves Wednesday night in Vancouver , and his efforts throughout the finals earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP for the series. The victory parade is scheduled for Saturday morning on the streets of Boston .
(UNDATED)- In baseball’s American League, the Cleveland Indians take on the Detroit Tigers today in the rubber match of that three game series. Thursday’s winner in that series takes sole possession of first place in the AL Central. The Indians are 4-1 against the Tigers this season, but have lost their last two series in their division. Staying in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox look to avoid their second straight loss, as they take the field against the Minnesota Twins today. The pitching matchup will feature Chicago ace Mark Buehrle, facing off against Nick Blackburn for Minnesota . A victory for the White Sox would give them their first victory over the Twins this season.
(UNDATED)- In baseball’s National League, the Milwaukee Brewers look to break even in their four game series with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won the first two games of the series earlier this week, but lost 9-5 last night against the Brew Crew. Staying in the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals look to end their five game losing streak in the nation’s capitol tonight against the Nationals. The Cards haven’t won since their 9-2 drubbing of Houston exactly one week ago. A loss would hand St. Louis their second consecutive sweep, as well as their longest losing streak since September of 2008. The Cincinnati Reds have the day off today, after completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers last night.
