Chantel-Atlanta Monthly

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
I am an editorial intern with Atlanta magazine.
2) How long have you been interning?
Four weeks - and I'll be here until I start graduate school at the University of Missouri in August.
3) What is your favorite genre of music?
Indie folk/rock music.
4) What was your first car?
My older brother and I had to drive our dad's enormous Chevy suburban before we were allowed to drive any other car. I hated it at the time - but because of it, I think I could drive just about anything (as long as it's not a stick).
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
I just got my first writing assignment, which I'm very excited about: a sidebar for the magazine's September film package. It's about how to get your house or property listed as a filming location. I'm also helping out with a digital archive project, which means I get to read some amazing articles from decades before I was even born.
6) How did you find out about Emmis?
I have a few friends and family members who subscribe to Atlanta magazine. After hearing what a great publication it was, I did some research and eventually applied.

Katelyn-Atlanta Monthly

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
I am an editorial intern at Atlanta magazine in Atlanta, GA.
2) How long have you been interning?
I started my internship in the middle of May, and I will continue into the first week of August. Once UGA resumes classes, I unfortunately won't have enough time to continue commuting to Atlanta.
3) What is your favorite genre of music?
I love all types of music, but classic rock, funky blues, and anything I can dance to are my favorites!
4) What was your first car?
My first car was a forest green '96 Subaru Legacy, a hand-me-down from Mom. I'm glad to say I have since bought a white '07 Honda Civic, and it is one of my true loves.
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
My main task is fact-checking rough drafts that come through as one of the first steps in the editing process for upcoming issues. I am also working on creating pdf files of past articles for the "Archives" page of the magazine's website. I hope to be able to squeeze a few articles into some upcoming issues as well!
6) How did you find out about Emmis?
Atlanta magazines previous Editor in Chief, Rebecca Burns, came to UGA to speak several times in the past. She is currently revamping the digital media aspect of Atlanta magazine, with a lot of focus on the iPad app. Every time she speaks, she encourages everyone to consider interning with Atlanta magazine, so I did!

Craig-Network Indiana

In the previous posting Craig is spotlighted and discussed his writings for Network Indiana below is a taste of what he has put out so far!

(VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA)- There is a new champion in the National Hockey League. The Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 last night in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to win their first championship since 1972. It was the fourth loss in five games for the Canucks, after winning the first two games of the series. For Boston, it was the second time this postseason that they came back from a 0-2 deficit to win a matchup. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas made 37 saves Wednesday night in Vancouver, and his efforts throughout the finals earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP for the series. The victory parade is scheduled for Saturday morning on the streets of Boston.

(UNDATED)- In baseball’s American League, the Cleveland Indians take on the Detroit Tigers today in the rubber match of that three game series. Thursday’s winner in that series takes sole possession of first place in the AL Central. The Indians are 4-1 against the Tigers this season, but have lost their last two series in their division. Staying in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox look to avoid their second straight loss, as they take the field against the Minnesota Twins today. The pitching matchup will feature Chicago ace Mark Buehrle, facing off against Nick Blackburn for Minnesota. A victory for the White Sox would give them their first victory over the Twins this season.

(UNDATED)- In baseball’s National League, the Milwaukee Brewers look to break even in their four game series with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won the first two games of the series earlier this week, but lost 9-5 last night against the Brew Crew. Staying in the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals look to end their five game losing streak in the nation’s capitol tonight against the Nationals. The Cards haven’t won since their 9-2 drubbing of Houston exactly one week ago. A loss would hand St. Louis their second consecutive sweep, as well as their longest losing streak since September of 2008. The Cincinnati Reds have the day off today, after completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers last night.

Craig-Indianapolis Radio

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
I am a sports broadcasting/news intern at 1070 The Fan, ESPN Radio in Indianapolis.
2) How long have you been interning?
Since May 16th
3) Any hidden talents?
I have hobbies but I wouldn't say I'm talented at many of them ha ha!
If anything I'd say acting. I was a member of the drama club in high school and have been in several plays.
4) If you won the lottery whats the first purchase you would make?
It would depend on when I won the lottery. If it was this summer, I would either use it for gas or buy a more fuel efficient car because I drive back and forth from Muncie every day. But it would be a more sportier car if I won this fall.
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
Not anything big, just the standard running the audio board, answering phones, editing interviews and that kind of thing. Although I have been asked to write stories for Network Indiana. So that's pretty cool I think.
6) Do you text, email, twitter, or facebook most?
Probably facebook, but texting is a close second.

Sarah-Cincinnati Magazine

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
I intern at Cincinnati Magazine in the Special Section/Custom Publishing department.
2) How would you describe the Emmis location you work at?
I just started here yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised with what surrounds the office here in downtown Cincy. We're located in the beautiful Carew tower, right next to a retail mall. We're also next to fountain square, which holds different events throughout the summer. The office itself is great, too!
3) Wildest food you have ever tried?
I'm so picky. I tried shrimp for the first time a few months ago at Benihana, though!
4) What was your first car?
A 1998 Toyota Camry, nicknamed "Cami," that I still drive today.
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
I just started yesterday! (I went to Ohio University which is on the quarter system so I just finished this past week), so right now I'm fact-checking other peoples' stories. My main goal is to do some writing of my own to build my portfolio! Since my schooling is over (though I won't receive my Magazine Journalism degree until this internship is completed), I will begin job searching very soon!

4) If you won the lottery whats the first purchase you would make?
I would invest most of my winnings, but I would love to buy a new laptop that could better handle music production. That, and maybe some VIP tickets for myself and a few friends to see some of our favorite bands in concert!
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
I'm incredibly excited to promote both Emmis stations at Lollapalooza. The opportunity to connect with individuals as passionate about music as those who attend Lollapalooza is truly unparalleled. I have already talked to some extraordinary individuals through promotions work at Jamboree 2011, and I have many fond memories from that event as a result!
6) Do you text, email, twitter, or facebook most?
I'm an avid texter, but my social networking tool of choice has to be Facebook. I've been on the site since 2005, and it's just second nature by now for me to check my profile multiple times a day.

5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?

6) Song you cant seem to get out of your head?

  1. I am both an Editorial and Publishing intern at Atlanta Magazine in Atlanta, Georgia. I couldn’t choose between the two departments and am curious about both, so they’re sort of fusing them for me!
  2. I just started last week. I’ll be here from June until August, when I’ll return to school for my senior year at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
  3. As a child, I pretended to be a soccer player, although in retrospect there was never much talent there. I now run recreationally and yet avidly, as well as practice yoga.
  4. Well, I have a lack thereof: I can’t roll or u-shape my tongue. Apparently only like 4% of the American population cannot do that, and I’m one of the (un?)lucky few.
  5. Not yet, but stay tuned! I’m Atlanta Magazine’s first dual-department intern, so who knows what will happen!
  6. Actually, the Band-Aid jingle has been resounding in my head for a few days now, inexplicably. Good marketing, I guess, because I don’t even remember watching the commercial!

Jamboree 2011 takes place in our Chicago area and is put on every year  by the radio team. This year bands like 30 Seconds to Mars, Seether, Sum 41, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus were among the bands at the event along with many more!

Here is a picture from the event of all the interns at the station :)

Catherine-Cinncinati Magazine

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
I intern at Cincinnati Magazine in downtown Cincinnati. I am in the Special Section/Custom Publishing department.
2) How would you describe the Emmis location you work at?
The location I work at is very urban and laid-back. Since it's right in downtown Cincinnati, there is always something going on in the town square across the street or some new restaurant going on in the evenings. Inside the office, everyone is busy at work and extremely nice. Everyone is laid-back and willing to help at the new people, just like interns like me. I have learned so much in my two weeks already, so I can't wait for what the whole summer has to offer.
3) Wildest food you have ever tried?
The wildest food I've ever tried was frog legs. Not sure I would ever try it again or order it at a restaurant, but it wasn't too bad!
4) What was your first car?
My first car was actually a 20 year old Lexus that my mom and dad bought right before I was born. They label it as the "family car," however, I was usually the only one that drove it once I got my license, but they never let me forget that it's not "my car."
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer at Emmis?
Well, I just recently finished writing a piece called "Girlfriends Getaway," which featured five destinations within a few hours of Cincinnati that would be great places for a girls trip. I will also be responsible for our 2011 Social Datebook which lists any events, gala or fundraiser walks to support different organizations around Cincinnati. I contact a lot of different people and then will develop a listing of all the events for the September issue.

Indianapolis 500-Intern Event

The Indy 500 is one of the biggest events of the year in Indiana and is full of great experiences for the Radio Interns in Indianapolis. Posted below are a few pictures from the race and promotions in the weeks leading up to it! Enjoy!

Samantha-Chicago Promotions!

Our first spotlight is Samantha and she is a Promotions Intern in Chicago :)

1) Where do you intern and in what department?
2) Describe your first day at Emmis in one word.
3) What is your favorite genre of music?
4) What was your first car?
5) Any big projects you are working on for the summer?
6) Worst class experience you have ever had?

1) I intern in the Promotions and Marketing Department at Emmis Communications in Chicago for WKQX (Q101) and WLUP (97.9 The Loop). Both are rock radio stations. Q101 plays more alternative rock and The Loop plays classic rock.
2) My first day at Emmis described in one word:
3) My favorite genre of music is Electro/House when I am in an upbeat, party mood. In my downtime when I am looking to chill out, I like classic and jam band rock.
4) My first car was a 2001 Acura Integra.
5) My biggest project for the summer is working at my seasonal job in the suburbs, helping out at the radio stations, and reorganizing my closet!
6) If you are referring to the classroom, I cannot say I have really had a bad class experience. I am USUALLY on top of my game with school and take care of business. However, my worst class experience would probably be when I had to give a speech for my public speaking class and was not aware of the fact that we had to give that speech on that day. Basically, I had to wing it but it all went well in the end! It's a good thing I had a lot of prior knowledge on the topic I had.
The attached image is from some promo work I did with 97.9 The Loop at the 2011 International Auto Show in Chicago with Subaru.

Caroline-HR Intern Indianapolis

Hello everyone! I am the 2011 Summer HR Intern for Emmis in Indianapolis. I am currently working to get this blog up and and running and am working with the Emmis Facebook to help with material. Some of my job responsibilities are coordinating luncheons for the Indianapolis Interns, conducting informational interviews, and contacting interns at all of our locations. I hope to get updates posted on this weekly with spotlights, events, and helpful information for interns to learn about other interns throughout all of the Emmis locations. A few fun facts about me: I am a senior at IUPUI studying Human Resources Management and Business Management, I love sports (Go Colts!), and I am learning how to play golf this summer! Emmis should be challenging ride, but I am ready for the excitement and interesting information I learn from everyone this summer!

In Honor of the Indy 500 Recently, I chose a picture from the practice rounds with Helio :)
